Gastroenterology

A critical step in the prevention and treatment of diseases of the digestive system is for the physician to have an accurate view of what is happening in a patient's digestive tract.  The most effective way to do this is endoscopy, a procedure that uses a flexible, lighted instrument to explore the inside of a patient's body. Yuma Regional Medical Center operates a state-of-the art endoscopy center which includes two procedure suites and four beds for preprocedure/postprocedure care.

In addition to aiding in the diagnosis of diseases of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and stomach, endoscopy is used to perform therapeutic procedures such as the removal of polyps.

Procedures performed at YRMC's endoscopy center include:

  • Colonoscopy, examination of the colon, including biopsy and polyp removal.
  • EGD, (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) also called upper endoscopy, which is used to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum (portion of the small intestine).
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) which combines endoscopy and ultrasound technology to obtain images of the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs. The YRMC endoscopy center uses highly advanced Olympus ProSound Alpha 10 equipment, one of only 10 units in the country.
  • ERCP, (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) used to examine the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas.
