The YRMC Bariatric Surgery team is committed to guiding you every step of the way through the LAP-Band® process so you'll know what to expect.
When will I be admitted? You'll be admitted on the morning of your surgery.
How long does the procedure take? You may be in the operating room for two or three hours, but the actual procedure typically takes about one hour. Then you'll spend a few hours in the recovery room.
What can I expect after surgery? After the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel some pain or discomfort. This can usually be treated with ordinary pain relievers. Your YRMC care team will help you get out of bed and start moving as soon as possible to help the healing process.
On the day after the surgery, you'll likely have an X-ray. This will allow the YRMC Bariatric Surgery team to see that everything is going correctly with your new LAP-Band® System. As part of this process, you may be asked to swallow a liquid that can be seen on X-ray.
How long will I be in the hospital? Usually, your stay is less than 24 hours. It may be longer if there are complications or if the surgeon has to change from the laparoscopic procedure to a regular surgical procedure with a regular incision. You can rest assured that the YRMC Bariatric Surgery team will work hard to see that you have your best experience with the LAP-Band® System. When you are discharged, your care team will give you detailed instructions to follow as you continue on your road to recovery and weight loss.
